Planning Your Cape Town Visit

A visit to Table Mountain

You can buy a ticket online for either a morning or afternoon trip to the top by cable car. However, an excursion to the 3,500-foot summit always depends on the weather, so check it before you go. It’s wise to bring a sweater with you, and wear sunblock and proper footware. If you plan hiking to the peak or along one of the trails at the summit, be safe and bring water, snacks and a friend.

How safe is it?

As in any other city you visit, it’s always best to keep your wits about you. It is recommended to take a taxi in Cape Town at night, rather than walking, and be on your guard when withdrawing cash at an ATM. If you’re curious about visiting a township, then go with a group led by an experienced guide.

When to go

Cape Town has a temperate climate. October to April offer warm and dry weather, but the notorious south-easter winds occur from December through January. February to mid-April has great beach weather, and hiking enthusiasts will enjoy crisp, clear days from late April to early June.

How many days should you spend in Cape Town?

Four to five full days allow you to experience the sites and sounds of the Mother City at a leisurely pace. Stay longer if you’d like and use the city as a base to explore the beautiful, surrounding areas in the Western Cape, such as the wine region of Stellenbosch.

I had the pleasure of having Pieter guide me and a group of 9 others on a Garden Route tour this February. Can’t say enough good things about the experience – Pieter runs a highly professional tour while maintaining a fun and positive attitude. He went out of his way to accommodate all our various activities and make sure everyone on the tour got the most out of their experiences. I would highly recommend Cape Town Experience for anyone visiting the Cape and I know that if I ever go back I’ll be booking with him again.

I booked a 5 day Garden Route trip for myself and my 70 year old mother. Peter was enormously helpful and flexible with regard to altering the schedule to fit in our requests. Our guide was Sarel who was very friendly, knowledgeable and patient. The choice of accommodation along the way was varied and of a high standard which enhanced our trip. The itinerary was varied and interesting. It was an excellent experience and I wouldn`t hesitate to use Cape Town Experience Tours (and the sister company Cape Team Tours) again. Highly recommended.

Nobody warns you about the frequency of high wind in Cape Town preventing trips to Table Mountain or Robben Island . We paid a lot of money for a very poor trip anyway, and the two main attractions were both cancelled but no refunds are offered .
